Stacking Debuff

The boss or his adds have a debuff which they can place on some (or all) members of the raid. In some variants, this is actually a buff on the boss. Either way, it has multiple levels and the raid must take care not to do things which exacerbate it.

Raiders can sometimes Stand in the Good Stuff or Hide Behind the Pillar to eliminate or reduce the debuff. When inflicted only on tanks, this is a common mechanic for enforcing a Tank Swap.

Examples

  • Pit of Saron
    • Garfrost's ice aura will stack to unmanageable levels unless you get out of LOS, courtesy of the saronite boulders he throws.
  • Naxxramas
    • The Four Horsemen encounter is built around managing multiple debuffs of this type.
  • Ulduar
    • Hodir has a debuff which causes progressively more damage to players who stand still (and aren't next to a Toasty Fire.)
    • Yogg-Saron places an Insanity debuff on all characters, which takes control of them when it reaches 100. When not engaging in Hard Mode, players can regain sanity by running to a green beam.
  • Icecrown Citadel
    • Deathbringer Saurfang generates Blood Power for himself whenever he or his adds manage to hit a player.
