Words and
phrases.  Connect.  Connect.  Structure.  Structures and meaning.
Things, not people.  People, not non-people.  Grasp.

JUNE 2254.

Hello,
diary.  How are you doing?

I am having a good day.  I am
thinking in words and phrases.  I can discern meaning in sentences.  I
can think with structure.  I am practicing.  I want to be good at words.

This
is my special place.  I put words here.

Next year will be a
special year.  Even though the last two digits of the year will be the
same every eleven years, the first two digits will only be the same
every millennium, plus a century.  Next year, we will have two pairs of
digits.

AUGUST 2254.

My name is Joseph.  I was in an
accident.  Some doctors are helping me to learn again.  I hurt my head.
I lost things like memory and language, and other things.  The doctors
are helping put it back into my head again.  They are using some
machines.

Here are my doctors' names.

Dr. Bonnie is nice.
She is in charge of everyone else.  She tells me that I am just like
someone called Lazarus.

Dr. Fred is quiet.  He likes to talk to
himself, but he doesn't like to talk to other people much.  He knows a
lot about the machines they are using.

Dr. Rhupai is fast.  He is
good with his hands.  He fixes things really well.

Dr. Malcolm
is tough.  He cares a lot, but he always tries to hide it.  He talks a
lot about things like discipline and schedules.

Oops, I am late
for my appointment.

AUGUST 2254.

Everyone is real nice.
They say I am able to hold ideas together.

I learned more about
the machines they use.  I am going to transcribe the name they use for
one of them.

Holistic Mnemonic Interface (HMI)

This is the
main machine, only it's inside my head and is so tiny that nobody can
see it.  I asked Dr. Fred about how they were able to use it.  He said
that people build machines smaller than themselves, then use those
machines to build smaller machines, and use those to build still smaller
machines.  He says the smaller the machine, the better it is at
treating people.

SEPTEMBER 2254.

Dr. Fred explained to me
how the HMI works.  There are things called computers, that store lots
of facts and information.  And human brains, like the one I have, put
facts and information together.  Usually brains work with computers.  In
this case, since my brain lost all its facts but has most of its
ability to use them, the computers supply the facts.  Instead of
remembering like I usually would, my brain says "I want to remember
something", and the computer answers for it.  So my brain remembers
whatever the computer does.

I didn't have to ask Dr. Bonnie who
Lazarus was, because the HMI remembered for me.  I can't even tell it's
there or that it exists.  I just remember things from before the
accident, the same way I remember things from after it.

I want to
tell you about Lazarus.

Lazarus was a man from a book called the
Bible, from Earth.  He died, but a man called Jesus brought him back to
life.  They didn't really talk about what happened to him after that.
